Jeff looks like a semi-dead zombie ready to eat horse shoes and spit out nails. Matt looks almost collegiate in comparison.
The prefight staredown between the combatants was nothing short of intense. Neither looked away once during the whole rundown by the ref. Jeff "The Ram" Sammut looked in exremely good shape for this one. More cut than usual, you could tell he went on a cardio kick for this one. Hughes did not look like he trained quite so hard for this one in comparison.
At the start of round 1, coming out hard and attacking from the get-go, Jeff took the fight to Hughes, who seemed surprised by Jeff's aggressiveness, and let himself get taken down. Sammut is in side control as Hughes tries not to eat knees. Reversals with Hughes on top--nice! Sammut scrambles and gets back to the feet. . Sammut steps in a eats a crossÂ… he is looking a little dazed, tries to shoot and misses when Matt sidesteps. He lands from the shoot on all fours prompting Matt to step in with a vicious Shin kick to the head of Sammut. They are up and clinching, Jeff jumps to Standing guard and is slammed, Hughes starts pounding. Jeff lands a couple of good elbows before the end of the round.
Matt exploded in at the start of round 2 in crowd-pleasing fashion, connecting with a couple of knees. Fighters circle early trading punches with Matt scoring a nice left. "The Ram" acknowledges the shot and promptly rushes in and notches the takedown. Nice left hand lead from Sammut lands square. Over and over Sammut rained down hammer-strikes and elbows onto the face of Matt and there were several times in the round when the referee warned Matt that he was going to stop it. Somehow, though, Sammut was unable to finish his beaten, swollen and bloody counterpart, even after gaining side-control and mount several times in the round.
Both fighters on their feet are looking to strike to start the round. Sammut hooks, Matt throw an outside kick, and Sammut returns the favour. Jeff repeatedly moved in with the punch combinations in this round, while Matt stayed light on his feet, peppering his opponent with low kicks while looking to get the high kick through. Jeff used a nifty foot sweep to put Matt Hughes in the 1/2 guard. Jeff lands another outside chop and immediately attempts a anklelock catching Matt in the hold. Matt spent the next few moments struggling to get free before finally wresting from the grasp of Jeff standing back up. The action returns to the feet and stays there until the fight ends. Jeff is given the decision victory.
Hughes was gracious in defeat, but even so he was primed for a rematch as soon as possible with Jeff. This is one fighter who hates to lose with a passion, and would not rest until he could avenge this loss.
