Billed as one of the top matches of the night, United States of America born Taekwon-Do, Jui-jitsu, Boxing-stylist James "The Superstar" Hagans was set to square off against Taekwon-Do, Jui-jitsu, Boxing practicioner Georges "The Rush" St Pierre.
You know, I don't think we're going to see a quick fight here. I really don't. Both of these guys have trained for a long fight and know that exhausting themselves in the first round is going to make it harder for them as the fight progresses. The ref walked the fighters through the usual rules. Both men shook hands in a show of respect and returned to their corners to begin the fight. "The Superstar" is grinning and Georges "The Rush" St Pierre is serious. Man, I can't believe the great crowd ovation for "The Superstar".
The bell rings for round 1, and after a short exchange of punches, Georges shoots in for a takedown... but gets reversed! Hagans has the advantage here as he postures up to rain down some punishment. Georges "The Rush" St Pierre was solid with his blocking and defences, and soon took to tossing the kicks in. This was beginning to look like it would be a long, hard battle. Hagans sweeps with a camel clutch from his half guard and the two battle to their feet, jockeying for position in the clinch. Hagans with a knee to the face. "The Superstar" slaps St Pierre into a Thai clinch and throws some great knees into his face as pulls his head down. St Pierre is unable to block them all and looks the worse for wear after the exchange ends. St Pierre lands a knee to the body at the end of the fight, but it was not enough in the judges eyes who award a draw to the fighters.
Georges "The Rush" St Pierre paced the ring restlessly clearly not happy with himself or the result of the fight. "The Superstar" was taking the moment in completely, jumping to the top rope, posing to the crowds as they cheered him on. The announcer is with James for a post-fight interview. Fans are booing the hell out of James right now. He says he thought St Pierre was going to get the decision because the judges reward points for being on top.
